By distributing Poppies on Veterans Day, the Auxiliary was able to obtain approximately $850 in donations.
History:
In 1923, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion Family in
memory of the soldiers who fought on the battlefields of Belgium during World War I. "The poppy" was the famous wartime poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D.
“In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row…”
Between the crosses row on row…”
The image of the poppy as a memorial flower to the war dead can be
traced to a single individual beginning in November 1918, Ms. Moina Michael, who bought a bouquet of
poppies and handed them to businessmen where she worked. She asked them to wear
the poppy as a tribute to the fallen.
Crepe paper poppies are hand made by disabled or hospitalized veterans. Supplies to make poppies are provided free of charge by the American Legion Auxiliary Department in whichever state the VA hospital resides. Veterans are paid a stipend for their work.
Poppies are not sold by volunteers—they are “distributed.” The person acquiring the poppy is invited to make a donation at his or her discretion.
During this Veterans Day our post distributed approximately 600 poppies and received $850 in donations, the average donation was about $1.41 per poppy.
Congratulations on a great job this year, we thank everyone who took the time to assist in this effort to distribute poppies to help disabled veterans and their families.
